Like most people, you’ve probably abandoned the idea of moving this year but there is a solution – don’t move improve! If you’ve got a tracker mortgage you’ll have more pounds in your pocket and it makes sense to invest in your home so that when the market is back on track your property stands out from the rest.
|We spoke to Jane Ringe of Poised to Move Ltd to get her opinion. Jane is one of JuggeFrog’s interior designers and her company offers interior design, home makeovers, house doctoring and home staging services in London and the South East.|
Jane says she is often asked what improvements give the best return…
“Extensions, loft and garage conversions or creating a basement will add the most value. Open plan living is now very popular and knocking down a wall to open up a space that is filled with light will always appeal to potential buyers.”
You’ll need to bring in professionals to carry out the kind of work Jane talks about and should also contact your local authority to find out if planning permission is required. You can find recommended tradespeople by using the JuggleFrogs search box on the left of this page. You can also talk to people who’ve had similar work done to get their advice.
“Replacing an outdated kitchen will increase the value of your home. If the configuration of your kitchen works well and the carcasses are sturdy then keep the layout as it is and change the doors. Fitting a new work surface and smart new tiles will bring it into the 21st century.”

Potential buyers are still swayed by original floors so if you’re lucky enough to have wooden floors consider having them sanded and re-stained. You can hire sanders and do it yourself but you’ll never do as good a job as a professional. A sanding company will work quickly and cleanly, repair any damaged planks and produce the exact colour and finish you want. Alternatively new carpets instantly lift a room and you’ll find there are plenty of bargains around at the moment.
“Like kitchen renovations, adding an en-suite bathroom or renovating an existing bathroom always pays dividends.”

So you’ve decided – dont move improve – but you’re still not sure where to start with a renovation project? A meeting with an interior designer is a good idea and most of them are happy to meet for an introductory chat (with no obligation) and will tailor their service to your needs. If you prefer you should also be able to find female interior designers to help you.
“Perhaps a cost effective verbal consultation is all you need to help generate ideas and guide you towards an appealing overall look and style. Or we can take on full design projects that involve space and lighting plans, colour schemes, sourcing of fabrics and furniture, recommending tradespeople and of course those all important finishing touches.”
There’s never been a better time to improve your home with so many suppliers offering discounts and extended sales. Even if discounts are not advertised do talk to the sales person as many shops will discuss price reductions to keep the sale.
Thank you to our interior designer Jane who heads up Poised to Move Ltd for taking time out to give us her words of advice.
So now really is the time – Don’t move improve!
